Baruch Women’s Basketball senior Captain Mia Castillo made not only Lady Bearcat history, but CUNY Athletic Conference history by becoming the All-Time CUNYAC Top Scorer on Feb. 11, 2025.
Castillo reached 2,273 career points at Medgar Evers College, leading the Bearcats to a win. The Lady Bearcats started strong at 21-16 in the first quarter and by halftime were leading 41-29, ending with a strong 79-62 victory.
The All-Time CUNYAC Leading Scorer record had previously been held by Lauren Cargill. Cargill played at the City College of New York from 1999-2003, compiling 2,272 career points. Prior to Cargill, the record was held by Hunter College’s Shawn McCartney who accumulated 1,184 points from 1991-1995. Until then, for both men and women’s history, there were only two CUNYAC players to ever surpass 2,000 career points.
As senior Captain Mia Castillo enjoys her fourth season playing basketball at Baruch before graduating with an accounting degree in May, she has left a great impression on Baruch and CUNYAC athletics.
Castillo made local Channel 5 Fox News when she became the Baruch all-time scorer in men and women history on Jan. 11. Castillo is the first player in Baruch women’s basketball history to ever reach 2,000 career points.
In an exclusive interview with The Ticker, Castillo revealed that she is “so grateful for all of the records [she has] broken and all of the incredible games [she has] played with this team.” “It is difficult to say what [her] greatest accomplishment is” but if she “had to name one great accomplishment it would be all of the great relationships [she] made with [her] teammates and coaches,” Castillo said.
On Jan. 21, Castillo was named Divisions II/III Women’s Player of the Week by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association for the fifth time. Castillo leads the NCAA Division III nationally with 28.3 points per game.
“I actually never planned on breaking any records. I came into Baruch just hoping to win, and I have been blessed to be in a position to be a main scorer for my team,” said Castillo, as she is very thankful for the opportunities she has been given.
“I think if my freshmen year self could see all that I’ve accomplished, she’d be shocked. I saw the amount of points that the previous record holder had in my sophomore year and I never thought I would get close,” Castillo said.
As Castillo’s fourth season slowly comes to an end, she would like to leave some valuable advice for future Lady Bearcats. Castillo emphasizes that they should enjoy the collegiate journey regardless of being on an athletics team at Baruch or not, as Baruch has a variety of extracurriculars.
She advises students to “get involved as much as you can because there are so many amazing clubs and organizations on campus. Baruch has so many things to offer you if you are open and willing to go after new opportunities”.
