Let me just start by saying, “AHHHHHHHHH” — which just about summarizes how I feel about the semester ending and saying goodbye to all the amazing people I met at The Ticker.
I joined The Ticker as a Graphics Artist in 2022. I remember seeing the newspapers all over campus and knowing I wanted to be a part of it! Baruch College was still in that weird hybrid phase while transitioning from online to in-person, so I didn’t get the chance to connect with anyone from The Ticker until much later.
But then I met Alexandra Adelina Nita, the previous Graphics Editor, who was an absolute gem. They introduced me to one of my now yearly traditions — the Mocca Arts Festival, which also happened to be my first article!
That, combined with other interactions, solidified my decision that The Ticker was where I wanted to be. It became my go-to creative outlet, balancing out all the business and non-arts classes I was juggling at the time.
When the opportunity came to take over as editor after Adelina graduated, I couldn’t say no. At first, I was definitely intimidated. Attending editorial meetings and interacting with everyone, I felt like an imposter since I hadn’t really gotten to know anyone yet. But I’m not exaggerating when I say that I quickly felt at home and found my place within this beautiful community.
Everyone was so welcoming, talented and kind — I looked forward to every visit to The Ticker suite, where I was surrounded by some of the most creative people I’ve ever met!
I’d been planning to graduate early for a while, but being at The Ticker made me reconsider. I’m just not ready to say goodbye yet. From those late afternoons of spilling tea in the suite to the delicious food Akilah Campbell always brought us, every moment at The Ticker was memorable.
In other clubs, I usually worked with two to four people, but the newspaper called for more collaboration and planning — especially with over 20 talented student artists.
It was a bit scary at first, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because that is where I met Richard Wen, who will take over my position. Working with them was an absolute joy. Their enthusiasm brightened my days, and I’m so proud to know that the graphics team will be in the best hands with them.
I’m forever grateful to everyone at The Ticker — I know I’m not always the most put-together person, so thank you for your patience.
Special thanks to Maya Demchak-Gottlieb for creating such an inspiring space. And thank you to all the editors who made me feel accepted into The Ticker community and helped put my imposter syndrome to rest.
I can confidently say that being with you all has made me a more confident and creative person. The sense of belonging at The Ticker is something I’ll never forget and I sincerely hope we keep in touch!
May the fun at The Ticker never end <3
