Prepare for President-elect Donald Trump to sink his teeth into presidential power like a parasite, feeding off the strength of his loyal Republican subordinates who have just regained control of the Senate.
In a tweet, Trump demanded that any Republican senator who wants to be majority leader must agree to recess appointments in the Senate, citing the long waits for confirmation votes.
This will allow Trump to appoint anyone he likes to his cabinet without needing Senate confirmation. This is unprecedented and widely contested in American history, the first of many deliberate blows to the system of checks and balances that will weaken the power of the Senate.
Several senators, including John Corbyn of Texas, Rick Scott of Florida and GOP Whip John Thune of South Dakota, have pounced to endorse Trump’s post, desperately grappling for Trump’s approval to be majority leader.
Elon Musk, Trump’s puppet master, also endorsed the idea, saying that it is “crucial.”
“100% agree,” Scott wrote on X. “I will do whatever it takes to get your nominations through as quickly as possible.”
In his first term, Trump’s political allies were known for kissing his ring, but before his second term begins, they’re already bowing lower, licking his boots and even the very ground he walks on, no matter what he demands.
Can we blame them? Those who dissent will be barred by the coupling power dynamics at play.
Everyone knows what Trump does to people who dare to disagree with him. He talked about using the military against the American people, the proclaimed internal enemy and jailing his political opponents.
In Trump’s America, checks and balances may soon be little more than a memory.
