“Wicked,” the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, is set to hit theaters soon, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in leading roles. Grande is known as a global pop sensation, while Erivo has gained acclaim for her performance in “The Color Purple.”
Recently, a TikTok user known as @Ferlozar made headlines by posting a short video that showcased a Photoshopped movie poster, aiming to echo the original musical’s iconic imagery.
The video quickly went viral, garnering praise from fans both new and old. However, it also caught the attention of Erivo, who expressed her strong disapproval of the edits.
In her response, Erivo stated, “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen… None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”
The alterations included obscuring Erivo’s eyes with her witch hat and changing her lipstick from green to red, which she found disrespectful.
Despite her criticism, many users on TikTok and other social media platforms, such as X and Reddit, seemed to dismiss Erivo’s concerns.
Grande, in addressing the situation at the Academy Museum Gala, remarked, “This is something that is so much bigger than us, and the fans are gonna have fun and make their edits.”
Director Jon Chu voiced his support for Erivo by sharing her statements on Instagram, calling her his “superhero.”
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, “Wicked” tells the enchanting story of two witches: Elphaba, an outcast gifted in magic, and Glenda, a beautiful and talented witch. Their complex friendship unfolds against the backdrop of the Wizard of Oz.
Since its Broadway debut on October 30, 2003, “Wicked” has captivated audiences, building a dedicated fan base eager for the film adaptation.
Despite the recent controversy, anticipation remains high for this whimsical translation of the stage production, which is set to premiere in theaters on Nov. 22.
