Each year, people await the announcement regarding the theme of the Met Gala. Announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9, this year’s exhibition theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Although the dress code has not been announced, the exhibit’s theme will shape what will be seen at this year’s red carpet event.
The exhibition will dive deeper into Black dandyism, which is “an exuberant attention to dress,” according to Vogue’s online issue. Dandyism can also be defined as dressing sophisticatedly, wisely, and well. The inspiration for the theme came from a book called “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” written by Monica Miller. Miller, who is a professor and chair of Africana studies at Barnard College and Columbia College, will also be a guest curator of the Gala.
The book explores themes of Black male fashion in the context of dandyism, as defined before as being well-dressed. Fashion and style dating back to the 18th century through present day can be expected. This theme not only shines light on how Black fashion evolved, but also informs people on the topic of dandyism and how important it is to the evolution of fashion.
The co-chairs chosen for the event are beautifully represented by some of the most famous Black men of the century. Chairs include Lewis Hamilton, the most successful Formula 1 driver of this generation, rapper A$AP Rocky, and singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams. Additionally, Colman Domingo, an American actor and director seen in movies and shows such as “The Color Purple” and “Euphoria,” will also be seen at the event. LeBron James will be an honorary chair.
This is the first year where all chair members are male and people of color. This decision was made by Andrew Bolton, the exhibitor’s curator, and Anna Wintour, the editor and chief of British Vogue, who has sponsored the Met Gala for years now. They wanted to promote designers of color and high-end men’s wear, according to First For Women.
Since the theme has historical content, many fashion fans hope to see pieces that have evolved through time and pay homage to iconic looks and pioneers. Fans may expect to see recreations of the intricate design and makeup of famous Black fashion icons like Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and Prince. Such celebrities are regarded as historical figures who not only made statements in fashion but have also changed it for the greater good.
Fashion is something we have seen change and evolve through time. We watch as fashion has contributed to history, especially politically and socially. In Miller’s book, she touches on topics like those and how she set the standard for the way the attendees should dress for this year’s upcoming Gala.
