Baruch began the tennis season with a sweeping victory as the women’s tennis team beat FDU-Florham, 6-1. The Bearcats won all three doubles and five of the six singles to secure a win in their matches on Sept. 5.
Following the new scoring format, the best of three in doubles will earn one team point and each victory in singles will also yield one team point. Therefore, the Bearcats earned six points, one for the three consecutive wins in doubles and five for each of the five singles matches won.
Ava Deguzman won at first singles with a landslide 6-0, 6-0, score. Deguzman, in her fourth year on the team, is starting the season strong with a victory in her first match. As the two-time Baruch Women’s Tennis MVP (2023, 2024) she is sure to be seen helping to take the team to the NCAA championships at the end of the season.
Aishika Yadav won in her second singles, 6-0, 6-1. Yadav also partnered with Maria Calvo to win at first doubles, 6-1. Similar to her teammates, Calvo won at third singles, 6-1, 6-0.
While the fourth singles match was lost 0-6, Baruch made a turn around for match five. Debuting this season, rookie Maria Rojas won at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Brianna Augustin won the final sixth singles 6-1, 6-0.
In a match against Yeshiva a few days later, the Bearcats won again overall, 4-3. In a very close match, Baruch outperformed Yeshiva in best of three doubles for one point, and then three singles matches.
To earn the team point in doubles, Deguzman and Bergman teamed up to win 6-2, and Yadav and Calvo won the second game 6-1.
Deguzman, Bergman and Yadav also won in singles to secure the other three points needed to win the close match.
Next the Bearcats will play Lehman college.
