“Eusexua is a practice. Eusexua is a state of being. Eusexua is the pinnacle of human experience.” Eusexua is a word created by FKA Twigs to describe a sensation when one is feeling so euphoric, they could “transcend human form.” The experimental artist mixes styles and genres of music to create art that is so unique there is no category to place it in.
Her newest song titled “Eusexua” is the title track and lead single for her upcoming album with the same name set to be released on Jan. 24, 2025. Twigs stated in an interview with The Prague Reporter that the song was influenced by the underground Techno Rave scene in Prague, Czech Republic.
The song begins with a pulsing, fast bass that will immediately move the listener. It is followed by electronic sounds that pinch the ears, consequently questioning or contemplating how you feel. The first verse involves Twigs sharing that there are no words to describe what she is trying to say. The chorus gives listeners clarity with the lyrics, “And if they ask you, say you feel it/But don’t call it love, Eusexua.” The song continues to get fuller and louder with bass and a more rave-friendly feeling, with a quick comedown.
Twigs’ use of layering and composition can represent the usual steps of many rave sets and most human experiences. For example, a slow start to find the groove of the music is shown with the solo bass. The uncertainty of the situation is represented by the random spurts of electric sounds, and finding comfort in them with the vocals and their lyrics helps the sounds become more formed. The peak of the party is felt by the harsher bass and use of all the sounds at the same time, only to arrive at the comedown shortly after, with nothing but her voice being heard.
The music video perfectly provides visuals for the song, depicting office workers being liberated from their desks with the music as the liberator. Dancers are seen going from fully clothed in office attire to nearly nude during the dance. The demonstrated liberation was inspired by the Techno scene, showing how dance and music can bring someone to a new state of mind, like “Eusexua.”
Twigs held a rave titled “Scorched Soil” at the popular London event space, “The Cause,” on Sept. 11, where she invited artists and DJs to perform with her and give over 1000 partygoers a night to remember.
Twigs described the dress code as “an unearthed nude expression birthed upon scorched soil… colors and textures are scarcely seen in this vision of a world with no judgment. Take me to the pinnacle of human experience, take me to Eusexua.” The dress code represents the reasoning behind the nudity in the music video, the role that expression plays in the Techno scene, and the concept of Eusexua.
The song was produced by Twigs along with Koreless and Eartheater, electronic dance artists who are some of the most popular in the genre. Twigs used her popularity to bring attention to smaller mainstream arts, putting them on a more approachable path while still allowing the message and highlights of these arts shine.
The song has been earning positive reviews, as it creates excitement for the release of the full album. Twigs has been known for creating great works of art further than her music, using her songs as a gateway for an entire experience. “Eusexua” is just the start of one of her greatest works yet.
